Tips For Winter Exercising

As the weather gets cooler, are you limited to indoor exercising?

No. You can still enjoy being outside, even in winter weather. But, here are some tips to keep you enjoying the fresh air in the coming months.

1) Dress in layers. It is tempting to throw on your heaviest coat when you head out the door for a walk, but the truth is that dressing too warmly is a common mistake for winter exercise. Dressing too warmly can result in excess sweating, and in cold weather this causes you to become chilled. So instead, dress in layers you can add and remove as you go. Choose dri-fit materials over cotton, and adjust your layers to keep the right temperature throughout your workout.

2) Remember your extremities. Put on extra socks to keep toes warm; invest in high-quality gloves to protect your hands; and don’t forget a hat or ear warmer. In cold weather your body’s priority is to keep its core warm, leaving hands and feet vulnerable to frostbite. So keep your hat and gloves by the door and always grab them on your way outside.

3) Closely check the weather forecast. While exercising in cold weather is fine, with proper preparation, rain and wind chills are a different story. Getting wet increases your vulnerability to cold and hypothermia, and wind has the same potential to penetrate your layers. If the weather is too extreme, opt for an indoor workout or rearrange your plans until the weather improves.

4) Drink plenty of fluids. In hot weather, most people remember to drink fluids before, during, and after exercise. In cold weather, though, hydration does not always come to mind. Drink even when you are not thirsty to prevent dehydration on cold, dry days.
